Polish No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek and American No. 4 Coco Gauff bounced back from first-set defeats to win their respective matches in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday in Spain.

Belinda Bencic had her back turned against the wall and was inches away from exiting the Madrid Open in the third round but then came back from a double-break deficit in the third set to beat No. 16 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 4-6 7-6 (2) in just over three hours of grueling play.
