Omar Fateh, the son of Somali immigrants and a democratic socialist, is a leading candidate in the mayoral race in Minneapolis and seeking to unseat incumbent Jacob Frey. Fateh made history in 2020 by becoming the first Muslim and first Somali American to be elected to Minnesota’s state Senate.
Frey, ahead of Omar Fateh by 10 percentage points in first-choice ballots, was reelected to a third term after ranked-choice vote reallocation.
Voters in Minneapolis turned out in record numbers for the 2025 municipal election, city officials said. According to the unofficial results, 147,702 voters cast their ballots in the election, which is 55% of registered voters.
