Senate Republicans are set to face their latest unity test this week on President Donald Trump’s tariffs and import taxes, which have created heartburn for GOP lawmakers since the White House imposed them earlier this year.

The U.S. Senate on Monday voted to confirm a Wisconsin prosecutor nominated by President Donald Trump to a federal appeals court, despite earlier opposition from conservative advocacy groups typically aligned with Trump's agenda.

The stopgap bill, which would extend government funding until Nov. 21, was defeated after a 49-45 vote. It required 60 votes to pass and has now extended the shutdown to two weeks. The Senate will reconvene and vote again on Oct. 15, marking the ninth voting session on the funding bill.
