The Trump administration won’t tap emergency funds to pay for federal food benefits, imperiling benefits starting Nov. 1 for nearly 42 million Americans who rely on the nation’s largest anti-hunger program, according to a memo obtained by POLITICO.

The USDA could also tap into contingency funds to keep SNAP operating, but it would cost about $8 billion to keep everyone’s benefits running in November. The size of the agency’s contingency fund is closer to $6 billion, according to CNN.

As the government shut down continues, federally funded programs are running out of money, That means some critically important programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP will run out of money.
