President Donald Trump's administration has given New York City a deadline of March 21 to end the congestion pricing program begun last month, a policy that was intended to reduce traffic in Manhattan's central business district and raise money to upgrade aging subway and bus systems.

The transportation secretary said he would revoke federal approval for the program, citing the cost to motorists; the Metropolitan Transportation Authority quickly filed a lawsuit to stop the move.

Duffy did not give a time frame for trying to shut down congestion pricing, saying only that federal officials would contact the state to "discuss the orderly cessation of toll operations."
