Formerly known as food stamps, SNAP is a federal program that provides low-income families with monthly payments to help them buy food. The program lapsed Nov. 1 after President Donald Trump and the U.

The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fully fund SNAP food aid payments amid the government shutdown. A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Judge John McConnell said the administration ignored the practical impact of partial SNAP funding. The USDA announced Wednesday it would cover 65% of benefits this month. Trump previously said he would halt SNAP during the shutdown;
