Legendary college football coach Urban Meyer broke his silence on the rumors connecting him to the Penn State job.

After starting the season 3-3, the Penn State Nittany Lions fired head coach James Franklin. The program is tasked with finding his replacement, now sitting at 3-5 after two games under interim head coach Terry Smith.

The first Nittany Lion has now made that choice. Redshirt sophomore tight end Joey Schlaffer is no longer on the roster. The Exeter Township (Reading, Pennsylvania) product did not travel with the team to Columbus for the Ohio State loss this past weekend.

Penn State, of course, is unranked in the inaugural CFP rankings after losing its fifth straight game. Still, Indiana coach Curt Cignetti found a ranking to pitch his team in girding against the upset as 13.5-point favorites. Hello, ESPN FPI!

Urban Meyer shot down any rumors that he spoke with Pennsylvania senator Dave McCormick about the Penn State coaching vacancy. Audacy’s Zach Gelb claimed he had two sources that told him Meyer was interested in the Penn State gig.

The college football coaching carousel is already spinning, and Penn State helped that happen when it fired James Franklin in October. Since then, several other high-end jobs have opened up, giving the Nittany Lions potential competition in finding their next head coach.

The kickoff time for when Michigan State faces Penn State on Nov. 15 has been set.

One team in Saturday’s matchup between Indiana and Penn State is ranked No. 2 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, but it isn’t the team most experts would have predicted two months ago.
