Since November 2024, approximately 15,000 to 25,000 eared grebes have died along the Great Salt Lake, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

More than 40 dead ducks were found along the shore at Whihala Beach this week, some frozen into the ice shelf along Lake Michigan.

That's the way one scientist puts it — referring to how infected wild birds survive long enough to spread it to birds and mammals around the world. And that's a serious risk for human health.
