Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in a months-long, high stakes race to replace Justin Trudeau.

Justin Trudeau, who was first elected prime minister in November 2015, announced on Jan. 6 his intention to resign as Liberal Party leader and prime minister.

Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took parting shots at President Donald Trump on his way out of office. Trudeau is expected to step down this week once Mark Carney is sworn in as prime minister after winning the Liberal Party’s race for a new leader.
