Hurricane Melissa intensified to Category 5 strength Monday as it neared Jamaica with up to 30 inches (76 centimetres) of rain and a life-threatening storm surge.

“This phenomenon is very dangerous,” Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martínez said in a statement from Banes, where he was located in what appeared to be a shelter.

Hurricane Melissa is one of the strongest storms to ever make landfall in the Atlantic Basin – tied only with Hurricane Dorian in winds and the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Keys with pressure.

Hurricane Melissa’s destructive winds could be significantly stronger in Jamaica’s mountains, which cover nearly half the country, than at sea level when the storm hits the island on Tuesday.

“It’s a catastrophic situation expected in Jamaica,” the World Meteorological Organization’s tropical cyclone specialist Anne-Claire Fontan told a Geneva press briefing.
