Nature: Key deer in Florida

Celebrating the National Key Deer Refuge's 60th Anniversary this week. We often get asked how the Key deer get from island to island. Its pretty simple, they either walk or swim. This helps them move about the lower Florida Keys pretty easily, although they prefer to stay on the islands that have natural freshwater wetlands. Although most of the population resides on Big Pine and No Name Keys, they range all the way westward to Upper and Lower Sugarloaf Keys. Video Credit: Mary Lou Dickson | Flo

It's really hot out! If you want to see the most wildlife, and capture the best photo opportunities at National Key Deer Refuge, it's best to get out early in the morning or wait until an hour or two before sunset. Just a reminder that the key deer find plenty of healthy natural food by themselves, so please don't feed them; it's not healthy for them, and it's against the law. Please help us spread the word. Key deer journal: The Key deer are found throughout the lower Florida Keys islands, from No Name Key/Little Pine Key area west all the way to Saddlebunch Keys. We always get questions about how Key deer get from island to island. As you can see, they are pretty used to island living, and they have no trouble wading through shallow water, swimming or even walking the bridges that connect the islands. Key Deer Population Makes it Through Another Major Incident The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) completed post Irma Key deer index surveys in their core habitats on Big Pine and No Name keys. Driving survey work following procedures used since 1968 began immediately upon the return of refuge staff from mandatory evacuation and continued for several weeks. “These Key deer and the natural habitat they depend on are pretty resilient. First they made it through the New World screwworm infes

We are celebrating the National Key Deer Refuge's 60th Anniversary this week with videos and photos that highlight just what an amazing place it is. One thing we really love about living here is the ability to view the unique Key deer in their natural environments. We encourage folks to visit the Blue Hole, Nature Trails or even walk some of the better maintained fire roads to get off the beaten trails a little to really appreciate the refuge. Key deer wander all of the habitats in the refuge, i

Daily Commute: While the endangered Key deer have acclimated to living alongside people they often need to take breaks away from the commotion to disappear to quiet areas of the refuge to rest, relax and re-chew their food. These deer were in a group of 11 does and fawns that were done their morning feeding and were heading across a tidal creek to a protected area. Have you ever seen a Key deer up close? 🦌 They’re adorable… but please don’t feed them. It can actually harm them and make them depend on people. Enjoy the moment, keep your distance, and let them stay wild 💚 #keydeer #bigpinekey #keywestvacation | Key West Virtual Tours

Dinner on the Refuge: Key deer are the smallest subspecies of the white-tailed deer found throughout most of North America. They are unique to the lower Florida Keys, only about 800-1,000 of them live on about 22 different islands, with most of their population focused on Big Pine and No Name Keys. Key deer does (females) should be having their fawns any day now, so please be on the lookout and drive carefully. Key deer feed on many of the native Florida Keys plant species; they'll eat leaves, f

It's Key Deer Awareness Day and, as we obviously love the Florida Keys, we want to share and take care of all its wildlife however we can! When driving to or from our Key Largo or Key West store, keep an eye out for these little cuties and treat them with as much respect as you would other wild animals—give them space, let them cross the road safely, and never feed them. The Key deer might be small, but they’re a big deal in the Florida Keys 🦌 This subspecies of white-tailed deer is found only in the Lower Keys, with most living on Big Pine and No Name Key. Key deer are about the size of a large dog, weigh between 45 and 75 pounds, and yes - they can swim from island to island. These deer were once nearly extinct, with fewer than 50 remaining by the 1950s. Thanks to conservation efforts, there are now around 800–1,000 of these cherished locals living in the wil
