Information about spice bush, Lindera benzoin. These are native to Oklahoma and make a great shrub or small tree. They grow in partial shade and they prefer so soil that is not amended. They do like good drainage so sandy soil is great. Those of you with clay so, you’ll need to dig a much bigger hole so that they don’t drown. They also don’t need much water. This one grows in gravel in between two raised beds. It only gets the runoff from those beds. If you have any questions, please ask me in t

What do we do with spicebush (Lindera benzoin) berries? So much! This week we :🌿gathered ripe berries from the woods, (picked through to get out any leaves and stems)🌿 made a tincture with brandy which we love for bloaty, crampy, belly aches, and also for helping break fevers🌿 dried the rest to save for later use until next season🌿 ground some of the dried berries and dried again to use as a warming spice (reminds us of allspice and cardamom)Spicebush berries are so full of wonderful volatile

APPALACHIAN SPICE 🌿🍒 Northern Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) produces berries, that when dried, taste similar to allspice or nutmeg. As a North American plant, spicebush was used readily by many eastern tribes, as both a food and medicine. During the civil war, spicebush berry tea became the beverage of choice for coffee-deprived soldiers. They also used it as a seasoning when supplies were unavailable. As a warming herb, spicebush improves circulation and increases perspiration. It's also great

🌿 The American Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is one of my favorite traditional medicines, yet surprisingly, few people know about this plant! 🙌 This North American shrub is amazing in more ways than one! It can be used as a food with the berries being used as a spice or a medicine by making a tea of the fresh twigs and leaves. It also is beautiful providing eye candy to your landscape and a safe habitat for many creatures! 🩸 Spice bush is known as a blood tonic and is one of the most powerful l

Every year, horticulture interns and staff at Garden in the Woods, our native plant botanic garden in Framingham, MA, raise three species of native giant silk moths—cecropia, polyphemus and promethea—in a screened cage. Here, an adult cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia), newly emerged from its cocoon, crawls toward the edge of the cage and begins climbing the screen wall. It is important that the moths climb a vertical surface after emerging from its cocoon, a process called eclosure. In this po

We grow native plants to contribute to a healthy landscape and ecosystem, which include the presence of arthropods—caterpillars, larvae, and mature insects, all of which have unique ecological roles. Many arthropods have evolved preferences and even requirements for particular plant species that serve as food and habitat. These plants are considered hosts. As growers of host species, we want to support both these creatures and the host plant. This leads to the question of how much herbivory—plan

Throwback video, because there are 66 days until spring and I cannot wait for wild edibles to start popping up again. 🤩 That said, nature’s already teasing us. During the warm spell we just had, wild garlic chives made an appearance, which I harvested and turned into a bright green finishing oil I’ve been drizzling on everything. (That was last Friday’s CSA chef item of the week 😉) Back in April, I made a Wild Garlic Mustard Pesto on live TV with @codyadamstv & @itsfeliciamichelle , using only
