Preparing slate for mosaics often involves splitting it into thinner pieces, then breaking them up further with a hammer. Here I’m using a plane/spokeshave blade to split the slate but a chisel will work too. Then I’m breaking the slate with my hammer. Although I’m breaking the slate over my hardie, you could also hold the slate over the edge of a brick or something similar. One of the best ways to break up slate for mosaics is to use a hammer! It’s also pretty satisfying! In this video I’m breaking up a roof slate with a hammer. The slate is held so a bit of it goes beyond the edge of the support and then the hammer is used to break it off. I’m using my hardie for support, but you can easily use a brick or something similar.
