The horticulture team at Applewood have been working hard on this transformation in the lower gardens alcove! In 2020, due to the threat of Trellis Rust, the team removed the cedar trees as a preventative measure and immediately began planning a redesign. Fast forward to September 2024, new plant materials were installed in the same footprint and include flowering trees, shrubs, and ground cover that display colorful foliage throughout the growing season. The original plants had mostly green fol

Today is Potato planting day on the Homestead! We leverage the Ruth Stout method of growing potatoes every year, and we absolutely LOVE it. It's so easy to maintain and the harvest at the end of the season is an absolute breeze. If you want to learn more about this method of gardening, we have an entire playlist of videos on the topic which you can find right here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoi3On3ZiLmGQmqOSlZeI6PXqBYgit6GL Seeding Square: https://amzn.to/3Ma6dVI Bone Meal: https://

In honor of the Ruth Stout method, here is my favorite way to use it. Growing potatoes! Her method is called “gardening without work” for a reason! Saves so much time, energy, and resources. Will you try it this year? | Sunshine Farm

If you find yourself in a season that doesn’t feel as productive or successful as you hoped, here’s some encouragement: Just as there is a season for blooming, there are also seasons for weeding, tilling, sowing, and watering. 🌱 Flowers aren’t the only markers of growth! Often times we meaure our lives by the blooms alone and forget that we’re called to also dig deep and abide in Christ. 🌷 👉 The Lord will not waste any season, and He is faithful to complete everything He starts. So let’s reso

My garden is my happy place! ♥ This video concludes the 4-part series here on Facebook. We started back in early February sprouting out our potatoes. About a month later, we started to harvest slips and rooted them in jars of water. In Late May we planted the slips in spent hay (ruth stout method). In late October before the first frost, we harvested the potatoes. If you missed the first 3 parts of this series, here's links to all of (4) of them: Part 1 - Sprouting Potatoes: https://www.facebook

Habitat Horticulture | Living Walls on Instagram: "It’s an honor to partner with @sfmoma to create this planter installation for “Ruth Asawa: Retrospective” — a living tribute to an artist who found beauty in both sculpture and the natural world. Inspired by Asawa’s signature forms and her love of gardening, the piece brings together flowing curves and plants drawn from her own palette. Catch a glimpse behind the scenes — and if you visit the exhibition (on view through September 2nd), head to t

Briana Bosch on Instagram: "Turns out this method actually works to terminate hairy vetch. What should we call it? 🤣 We’ve started cover cropping pretty much all of our annual garden beds here at our market farm either in spring or fall (depending on the production plant) so that we can grow our own mulch to both save money and make soil healthier. it does always get my goat a little bit when other farmers tell me that you can’t grow “at scale” without using plastic mulches and instead relying
