Later this summer, SR 302 at Little Minter Creek near Purdy on the Key Peninsula will close as we install new box culverts for improved fish passage. Right now it's scheduled for mid-to late-August but the exact date depends on some work that's happening right now. This video gives an idea of what to expect and detour options. Most people will follow a roughly 5-minute detour via 118th Ave NW, Creviston Dr NW and 134th Ave NW. Oversized trucks and semis will need to go up SR 16, over to SR 3 nea

UPDATE Wednesday, July 18: Due to additional time needed to complete the work, State Route 92 will now reopen at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, instead of Thursday, July 19. We are halfway through our 13-day closure of SR 92 in Lake Stevens, where contractor crews are building a wider fish passage. Earlier this week, crews did some literal heavy lifting as they put together the bridge structure of the new passage, which they’ll later bury under a freshly paved highway. The road is expected to reopen

Well this was gross. This morning a fish rendering truck took a dive on northbound I-5 near Smokey Point, damaging some guardrail but we’re happy to report, there were no injuries to the driver and the fish were, well, already…you know. Big thanks to our crews, State Patrol and Dick’s Towing for their fin-tastic work helping clear the roadway quickly and e-fish-ently! | WSDOT

We’re preparing for a big fish barrier removal project in and around Port Angeles at Tumwater Creek, Lees Creek and Ennis Creek. Starting Monday, March 3, US 101 will be closed for 80 days at the Tumwater Creek site. Need to know how to detour around the closure? This video has you covered. Construction at Lees Creek and Ennis Creek on US 101 just east of Port Angeles is scheduled to begin in mid-March. It’s one small stripe for fish, one giant lane closure for fish kind. Work continues along our Sunset Creek fish passage project affecting both directions of I-90 as well as two city streets in Bellevue. Beginning this week, there will be some noticeable differences for both directions of I-90 just east of I-405 in the Factoria and Eastgate neighborhoods. One lasting for a while (westbound I-90), and one just for this week (eastbound I-90). Here’s the scoop- Westbound I-90: The westbound I-90 HO

Go speed racer, go! Exciting to see coho salmon return to Leland Creek under US 101 in Quilcene on the Olympic Peninsula following our project this summer to replace a small culvert that was inhibiting fish migration. As of late September we've observed at least eight different salmon swim through the area where improvements were made and a local citizen reported seeing over a dozen after not seeing any the previous 20 years or so! | WSDOT

Salmon run! Well, it turns out they swim. And, thanks to some restoration work at Chico Creek , they're swimming in numbers we haven't seen in years. If you've traveled on a highway in western Washington, you probably passed through a fish passage work zone (or several...). A lot of that work has wrapped up just in time for the salmon to return. And, oh, have they returned! In 2024, we opened 24 barriers to fish in seven western Washington counties: Pierce, Thurston, Kitsap, Clallam, Jefferson,

We're doing a test run of supplementing our traffic cameras with a team of birds who are reporting back what they're seeing. While they have a bit more flexibility than cameras and can move pretty fast, they're also easily distracted by potential food - though so am I. Anyway, here's one of the team, a red-tailed hawk (according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife) keeping an eye on I-5 in north Seattle. Things were going great until it spotted a mouse and we haven't heard from it since. | WS

Ta-da! 🪄 And just like that, SR 411 in Castle Rock is magically open again! After a 15-foot sinkhole vanished (poof!), your ride is smooth, safe and ready for all travelers. Crews replaced the old, failing culvert, so water and fish can now flow safely under the road keeping the highway and the environment happy. Safe travels… to you and the fish. | WSDOT

The tension is palpable. Who had better chemistry? If you’re a Twihard heading to Forks for the festival this weekend: Expect to see a lot of these one-way traffic signals along the way. I know what you are. Say it. Out loud. “A work zone.” These portable signals help move vehicles through our fish passage work zones by controlling one-way alternating traffic. With several active fish passage projects on US 101, US 12 and SR 8, you should expect delays around the Olympic Peninsula. If you need t

It’s gonna be…construction season. And May. What’s it mean? More paving. More striping. More fish passage. And a whole lot more traffic backups in order to get all that work done. We know congestion and delays aren’t in sync with your summer travel plans. We’ll do what we can to communicate our plans ahead of time, so you can know before you go. So get hype, and start planning ahead: -Bookmark our website and our real-time travel map. Download our mobile app (it’s free!) -Use different ways to g

Tiny scenes from the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle, where the largest preservation project in Washington is well underway. Want to know what crews have been up to since we started work in mid January? Keep reading! Crews first set up the work zone and shifted traffic so we could safely get to the bridge deck. Then we completed milling - that’s when we grind off the top layer of old, worn concrete to remove damage and get down to a solid surface. Now we’re in hydro-demolition, which uses high-

Now streaming: Delays. Detours. Drama. DOTflix. 117 major projects, thousands of miles, one summer lineup that you can’t miss (even if you wanted to). And that doesn’t include the bonus content — day-to-day maintenance, emergencies and local city and county projects. 🤪 If you’re heading to a game, festival, concert, or road trip across the state this summer, you’re almost certainly going to encounter road work. Why? The truth is, between now and Sept. 30, there are only 14 days where there is n

Last Friday in the early morning, a bobcat was captured on camera for the first time using the Interstate 90 wildlife overcrossing! The wildlife overcrossing is a popular place -- In addition to this bobcat, monitoring cameras have documented deer, coyote, elk, snowshoe hare, porcupine, and other various small mammals. Our friends at WSDOT on the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East project caught this footage of the first elk crossing the I-90 wildlife overcrossing. She is the first elk to fully cross the bridge, after a skittish attempt last week.
