With the intense rain we have had this winter, silver birch bark (Betula Pendula) is a great natural fire lighting resource. The outer bark is very resinous and if you scrape a small dust pile using your knife it generally takes a spark really well in wet conditions. I use the bark of a fallen tree to build an all natural waterproof shelter roof. I use the bark for natural lashings, start a fire with a knife and Chaga, cook bacon, steak & eggs on a rock and drink chaga tea. I use balsam sap, yellow birch and cedar bark to help start my fire. I wake to a blanket of snow. I return in deep winter to find the shetler in good shape. I close in the sides and insulate with snow. With my fire it is quite warm reflecting off the rocks. I drink melted snow and make te
